Three Reports from Soumyasree

Report-1:

I am from Nandapur in koraput district . We are facing the prblem of frequent power cuts . Epecially for the last two months , the power is going off about ten times in a day . people and especially children like me are facing the greates problem when it goes off in the night. Please do something.Further the Sub-Station near the High school is under completion for the last mny days . Many parts have gone into the hands of robbers . it needs to be guarded.

Report-2:

A 108 Kalasa Gayatri Maha Yagyan was organised in Nandapur .Gils and women from the village tok out a procession on 5th June after bringing holy water from the nearby river and went upto Batrish Singhasan .The Yagyan which had begun at 10 am concluded with purnahuti at 4 pm . Thousands of devotess took part in the festival.

Report-3:

A pond was dug near langala Bhairav temple ( in between nandapur and Chingudichiyan) two years bck . but remained unused . What a loss for the ill planing . if it could have been dug near to the Nandapur village , it could have been used rather than remining idle.

Santakar:

I checked the Koraput Blog today and saw the many photos you have put on
Snapfish. Very interesting material.

From some of the texts accompanying the photos I have learned that good,
clean toilets are a priority for the school children. I thought it
interesting that the children claim at some schools the toilets are locked,
and I assume only available to the teachers and administrators. Maybe
that's because the kids make a mess of the toilet. Here in the USA the
schools have separate toilets for the adults and children.

I hope more toilets are installed for the children in the schools and in
their homes and villages.

Attached is a pic of the toilets at the campground where I stayed the night
before I climbed Half Dome Mountain. It requires no water for flushing, and
there is no smell, as a solar powered fan keeps the air pressure in the
bathroom slightly above that of the outside, so of course no smells can
drift in from the tank beneath the toilet seats. The tank itself
incorporates wood chips that have been infused with some kind of special
bacteria that eats the defecation more efficiently than the common
bacterias, and renders the whole mess into a compact and less odorous
compost that is then carried out on the backs of mules every couple of
weeks during the peak of the camping season (summer). Although both urine
and solid waste enters the tank, the warm air and additional solar power
fans dry out the urine so the compost that is removed is quite dry, like
soil.

In Koraput, such compost could be dumped in forests or used for the growing
of flowers.

You might wonder why the compost from the toilets in the picture is carried
out by mule instread of being dumped in the forest. That is because of
technicalities of the law, which require that efforts be made to prevent
the camp from having any negative effect on the forest. So all campers
must take their trash back down the mountain, and the human compost is
taken down the mountain also. Someone is likely profiting from hauling the
compost down the mountain, and I doubt there is much incentive on the part
of anyone else to mount a campaign against this ridiculous interpretation
of the law. So the taxpayer's money is wasted, as usual.

I did speak with the man who was loading up the compost on his mules. He
told me that sanitation is also a reason why the compost is packed out. As
the river is only about 200 yards from the toilets, packing the compost out
insures against water contamination. (of course one could simply pack the
compost further away from the toilets and then dump it. These toilets are
about 4 hours up the mountain from the trailhead.)

I can get more info about how the toilets are built for you or whoever
might be interested.

Why not give the Child Reporters the info about Sulabh International and
the pic of the attached toilets and let them confront the adult authorities
with the fact that the solution is likely well within reach, and perhaps
the slow implementation of such facilites and technologies is the result of
adult laziness and corruption. Please try to be there and snap a picture
of the faces of the adults when they are presented with these accusations.

‘We are poor because we don’t want to come out of the tag of being poor. Begging in the name of poverty has become a regular practice ‘ argued Binod Kumar Nayak , a child reporter from Ekkamba UP school in Jeypore block of Koraput district . He was responding to a question from Biswajit Kuldeep , a fellow child reporter from Adamanda UP School in Dasmantpur block to find out the reason of poverty in the region and more particularly among the rural masses, while participating in the district level ‘Child reporters’ Congress’ organized in the premises of tribal Museum of Koraput today .

More than 80 child reporters from all the 14 blocks of the district and the ULB of Koraput had come together to discuss on various issues that was affecting them and their community . While talking about provisions of toilets in the school , Evan Kandapan from Borigumma UP School narrated the stories of schools where the school toilets were locked and banned for use by children . Prasant Kumar Das , DPC of DPEP/SSA , taking a note of it from the children had assured that the schools will be directed to keep the toilets open for the children .

While highlighting the need of consuming Iodised salt in the diet , Dr.Pitambar Sahu , a retired doctor from Koraput said that the schools should have iodised salt in their mid day meal, Kavita Hantal a child reporter alleged that schools , despite of strict guidelines were using non iodised salt and urged the authorities to ensure the use of iodised salt in schools so that the children could lead a healthy life . Further expressing concern over the poor sanitation in villages , Sankuli Biswal , Project Coordinator of DWSM had asked the children to see that individual household toilets become a reality in each of their villages so as to ensure a healthy living for the children .

Despite of several interventions and rules and regulations children were seen punished by many teachers in the schools , Amit Kumar Jena , a child reporter from Ramgiri said . While responding to his concern , Narasingh Das , CRCC of Koraput said that there were many ways to teach the children rather than punishing them for their mistakes and corporal punishment should be dealt with all its seriousness .

Responding to a question from a child on the poor quality of rice being supplied to the schools causing ill health , Biranchi Narayan Rath , Sub-Collector of Koraput said that while measures were taken to see that proper rice and food stuff was supplied to the schools , the possibilities of poor quality rice as mentioned by the child could not be ruled out . he also ad assured the children that the district administration would look into the matter .

Festive occasions like Annual Function and Annual Sports brought new reasons to attend schools , Raimati Kandili , a tribal child from Boipariguda said . While appreciating the conduct of such functions in some schools in the district , children from many other schools were denied to celebrate , Subhasree Mandangi , from Forest Colony UP School in Koraput said . While there was no particular provision of funding to the schools the school management could take the support of the community to organize such events , Ashok Kumar Pangi , President , Zilla Parishad , Koraput said . However he also had urged the district education authorities to find out the ways if the schools could be given financial support to organize by themselves .

While appreciating the growing confidence in the children after getting involved in child reporters process , Sunil Verma , Programme Communication Officer from UNICEF said that this process which was born in the hills of Koraput had spread its wings to the shores of Andhra Pradesh , Bihar , Maharastra and many other states in the country . He had assured to take the fruits of the process further for it had ensured more child participation in the school and community , and had also created more opportunities for the children .

Sharing their views on the development of the child reporters Santosh Mishra and Pramaod Pattnaik, senior journalists from Koraput advised that the children should look towards more positive aspects of life than looking at only the darker sides of the society. Social workers like Pravakar Adhikari , U.Daniel, Advocate Ajit Patro and District Coordinator of Ankur , Saushant Nayak also had joined the children .

The annual issue of Ankurodgam , the bulletin of child reporters was inaugurated on the occasion .

Child Reporters Offer Recomendations to the District Administration

School is not just a building with some walls and class room s . It has to have a perfect communication between the teachers and their pupil . It should have space to play , a garden to feel happy , said, Rasmita Majhi , a student from a vernacular school in Koraput . She was one of the 60 selected children , regarded as child reporters from six schools from Koraput urban area were exposed to an altogether different learning experience by attending the school that was not theirs by DPEP/SSA in association of People’s Group fro Children’s Development (PGCD) , UNICEF & KFA, Koraput .

The prayer class in Forest Colony UP School was near to perfection while its garden filled with good number of flowers was a joyful experience l , Abhipsa Behera , a child reporter added . For Sibani Khora , meeting with new children in JELC UP School and making friendship with them was enough for the day to remember for long . Loving gesture of the teachers towards the children in E.Co.Rly UP School was impressive and seeing that the children were learning by using the Teaching Learning Materials(TLM) supplied by the government gave more food for thought for Elina, Kamalini , Kamini , Kalpana and other children who had spent more than six hours in the school .

While the well managed school premises of Mali Street UP School had sufficient reasons to cheer for the children like Sushanti, Bikash, Madhusmita , Padmabati and others, absence of toilets for the children made them worried . Apart from the construction of a toilet in the school there was an urgent need to do something about the foul smell rising out of the huge drain carrying dirty water , flowing near the school , Amrita Kuldip said .

The UP School of Rangabali Kumbha needed additional classroom as the students of Std.V were sitting in the veranda for the lack of sufficient number of classrooms , Debanjana Bastia a child reporter who had visited the school along with another nine children added. While the teachers were nice to the children there was also the need of a fair weather road up to the school , they felt .

Proper presentation of information like the time schedule of immunization for the children , details of funding received for the development of the school, on the walls of the school building along with many other vital statistics had reinforced the confidence among the children that adults were there with the children at all level , another child , Debasmita Sahu said . While the school had the provision of toilets , boundary and garden , the students of StdVI were unfortunate for the positioning of their classroom which was adjacent to the dry fish market . They need to be shifted to other place , felt Najarana Begum , a child reporter .

While the use of TLM , made classrooms vibrant and interactive, children , after making interaction with other children and teachers had come out with a suggestion for the district administration asking it to construct toilets in all the schools in the urban areas like the schools in the rural areas , to take steps to protect the children by building boundaries around the school buildings , construct additional classrooms , provide drinking water facilities and equip the schools with adequate number of teachers for ensuring quality education .

This exercise of enabling children to visit other schools in the neighbourhood would go a long way in enhancing their horizon of learning through interaction and also would build a sense of brotherhood among the children of different schools by understanding each other’s problems , challenges and possibilities , said, Prasant Kumar Das , DPC , DPEP at Koraput.

A science exhibition was organized at Nandapur where 43 projects were exhibited . In the Senior Category , Priyanka Mahapatra stood First, Manimala Sutar , Second and Sunita Hota was third . People from different parts of the globe visit this festival every year . This year , we, the 80 child reporters selected out of 1500 childreporters in the district had come here . We stayed here for three days . We met people starting from a chatwala to the Governor of the state. We talked to them , interviewed them and published two news bulletins based on our observation . Repair the road Please

Mr Baijayant Panda, Member of Parliament from Orissa and BJD Parliamentary Party Leader in Rajya Sabha, has, in an e-mail to Nishant Nihar(Forwarded herewith), supported the Campaign for Child Workers' Career Fund and assured to raise the issue in the Parliament. Child Reporters in Indian Social Forum

We,Three child reporters each from Koraput and Dhenkanal two from Keonjhar, one from Bhubaneswar and four from West Bengal , had been to Delhi recently to participate in the Child Rights For World Social Forum(CR4WSF), which was a part of Indian Social Forum.
Our participation in the forum was to interact with children and child loving people , who had come there. While we were in the train to Delhi ,we met many people who loved children very much . We learnt many things from them .
Yes we met one girl in the train . She was sweeping the floor in the train. We talked to her . She told on how she was facing problems in her village after her parents had died. She had to discontinue her studies to feed herself . She was no more interested to get educated as she was more concerned about her income in the train. We shared the fruits with her . She was happy .
We went to Delhi and ISF. We talked to the children and adults and wrote what we observed and learnt .We stayed for three days and brought out three newsletters . We are thankful to each one who had talked to us , enquired on our activities in the villages .
We are thankful to CACL and UNICEF for taking us there and have such a nice experience . We are sharing our experience with our friends.

Many many thanx for accepting me as your friend. I would be very happy to visit your place of work, to see you all, to walk hand in hand, to discuss and take up issues together, if you give me chance. Through me, you can also use the platform of The Statesman to make your voice heard in a wider level.

At present, I am concerned with a Career Fund for Child Workers, in the wake of lattest ban on child labour by the Government of India. Instead of going to schools, these poor friends of ours are working to escape from povert. To earn two square meals for themselves, some even for their entire family. I think, coming from a backward tribal district Koraput, you know this problem more than me.

If we stop them working, what's the alternative for them to earn food? What about their future? Hunger is the mother of all crimes. A hungry child denied work may become a beggar, a thief or an easy recruit for the crime network.

Future of a nation lies in the future of its children. It's high time the government should come out with a carreer plan for these rescued child workers. And if the government has not thought of it yet, we, the children, should come forward for our unfortunate friends in need. We should put up an united voice to make our policy-makers sit and take note.

I request you all to carry on a signature campaign for Child Workers' Career Fund and send it to the Prime Minister. If you want, I will be there with you at the end of the campaign.

You can also write me on any children's issue in your areas and whenever possible, I will try to publish it in The Statesman VOICES.

If we cannot be a sun to light up the whole world, let's atleast be small candles to fight the darkness sorrounding us.

He told us on NAtional Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme(NREG).He informed that every household will be given a job card allowing only those who had crossed 18 years of Age.He also said that every one can get a minimum 100 days of work under the scheme. If one family has three members , they could work alternately.

We are the children staying in the hostels attached to Schools under the Tribal Welfare Department.The number of tube wells is insufficient for the number of children staying in the hostel.Hence we bathe in the ponds. Yes, Bathroom with a tap of water could be the best thing .Thank you for your concern.

In my friend's school, children are not getting sufficient food . Hence many of them are leaving the school.In that school children are getting low quality soap.They get coconut oil mixed with water for their use. The cook uses the children for cooking.Dal is watery.Electricity is there every where exept in their reading room .

Interview on the Development of Our village

Dhaneswar Sahu is our Village Development officer. We, the five child reporters went to his office to interview him on the plans for the development of our village . He told us regarding many developmental work started by the government . He told that some days back the villagers were photographed for giving work by the government . But we asked him the reason for not giving the job cards even after so many days. To this he said that he would give them at the door step once he gets it.

Damaged Drain-Logging Water

The drain in our village broke . The concrete pieces are falling inside the drain . This stops the water flowing through it .Mosquitos are growing there .Some times the drain is cleaned . But when any vehicle passes on the road , the concrete falls again in to the drain and the problem continues.

Dear Child ReporterI just happened to read your post about the liqour. It is good that sale of liqour is banned in your area, but you must spread awareness about the ill-efects of liqour among people your age, who are likely to take up the habit as young adults. You can do this is several ways. 1]Posters and notices written out by all your friends which could be put up on various walls.2]Put up street plays about the effects of liqour, how peer-pressure (pressure from people your own age) can be resisted.3]examine why young people in your area might be taking to liqour. in some places for example the reason is lack of other recreational activites (activities that are taken up after school etc). in which case you might want to talk to the elders in your locality about setting up youth centres. holding matches (cricket, football, gulli danda) between local teams, dance competitions etc.I am extremely impressed with this project. Liqour in Village

Many people in our village sell liquor . They mix many other things with the liquor. One women died after drinking that liquor . After that villagers banned selling liqour in our village . Some villagers were secretely doing the business.Others scolded them .
